book_pobWill somebody please tell me what the Hell this is supposed to be on the cover of this book?  I get that it’s supposed to be gold leaf and lapis or whatever, but what is it a picture of?

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

the book thiefIn the U.S. this book has been marketed as Young Adult, but I heard that Zusak didn’t intend it that way, and in fact that it was marketed as an adult book when it first came out in his native Australia.
