Virtual Advent Tour
Some things have fallen by the wayside recently. I never did post anything for the Progressive Dinner Party. I didn’t help out with Buy Books for the Holidays. There was no This Week at Bibliofreak sent out last week. Even the Kindle Give Away winner was announced late.
So, my date for the Virtual Advent was the 21st–two days ago. It should come as no surprise that I’m posting this only now. Hey, at least it’s before Christmas.
First, I have to share a little story. Every Christmas Eve, my Dad’s side of the family gets together. It’s the highlight of my Christmas.
This year, my husband and I are flying in on the 24th and going straight to my Aunt’s house from the airport. But we used to always have it at my grandparents house when I was little.
One of my favorite memories involves the song Feed the World by Band Aid. It came out around Christmas in 1984, but that Christmas I was only 22 months old, so the particular story I associate with this song could not have taken place that year. In fact, because I have such a vivid memory of this, it probably wasn’t ‘85 either. So lets say it was ‘86. I was 3, my oldest sister, Monique would have been 15, and my other sister, Sally, was 12. The ages sound about right (you’ll see).
I was probably wearing my red dress with the frilly white pinafore (oh yes), and either my Mom or Monique had probably curled my hair. Or my Mom had set my hair in spongy wet rollers the night before.
As this was the ’80’s, I was sitting in the middle of the back seat. I remember it being dark, but that could just be due to my memory.
Sally had made a mixed tape–of sorts. It was “Feed the World” over and over and over again. I loved it, as only a pre-schooler and an adolescent can truly love to listen to something so many times in a row.
Finally, Monique couldn’t take it any more, and she reached up and turned on the radio.
And “Feed the World” was playing.
So every Christmas season I hear this song and I think of my sisters.
Sally & Monique, this is for you. See you soon.

P.S. I just watched that video 4 times in a row. Some things never change.
This song is beautiful and cheesy. ‘there won’t be snow in africa this christmas’. is that a condition for receiving aid? because Australia should also qualify….that’s so adorable that your sister’s mix-tape was just one song over and over again.
haha!
Merry Christmas!
Have a good trip and enjoy all the goodies while you can!!! Merry Christmas!!!
What a great story! Sisters are so wonderful. My sister and I are very close and although we won’t see each other on Christmas (she still lives in Michigan), she will be close in my thoughts.
My sister and I had a yearly tradition when we were kids. Our favorite Christmas album was A Partridge Family Christmas Card (still is, actually). It came out in the late 60s/early 70s so my mom bought it when I was a baby, but we grew to love it as she played it every year since before we walked! So my sister and I would put together a little pageant of sorts for my parents…singing and dancing to that record and a few others we had. We did this yearly and it was one of the best parts of our Christmas every year.
Thanks for sharing your memories and have a very Merry Christmas!
I love this story!!! Thanks for sharing it and have a most wonderful of holidays!
I actually think it may have been ‘88 or ‘89 even, but really I am not sure. For some reason I think I was older when I made that tape, not twelve. I was probably at least fourteen. I too remember that vividly and it was soooooooo funny.
Also, I was the one who curled your hair, not Mom or Monique. I would curl your hair while you sat on the bathroom counter; you were so cute.
See you in Michigan.
p.s. We should go to karaoke at Boulders and do Feed The World if they have it!
That’s an awesome Christmas memory and association! I hope you have a lovely holiday and safe travels!
