Read-A-Thon: Update the Whateverth
See how this chick’s head looks like it’s falling off in this picture? Yeah, that’s how I feel.
I took out the sofa bed a few years hours ago, being considerate of my sleeping husband. In less than an hour, I’m not getting up and going to bed. I’m sleeping here, with Apollo, who has been keeping me company.
I also switched over to an audiobook, Northanger Abbey. You know that they don’t even talk about going there until half way through the book? I was saying on Twitter that I think this might be Austen’s wittiest book, which is good because that means some of the wit is actually registering with me.
O.K., one last meme:
1. Which hour was most daunting for you? I can’t do the math. It was between 1 and 2 AM PST. For one thing, my math was even worse then, as I was like, oh, at 2 AM there will be only 2 more hours. How shocked was I when I realized that 5 minus 2 was actually 3. Even before I made that realization I closed my eyes for a few minutes, and almost gave up. But then in the next hour, I made some more tea and switched to my audiobook.
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? I really enjoyed reading Alex & Me, and would have gone back to it, but as I’ll be reviewing it for the blog tour and doing an interview with the author, I can’t think clearly enough to think about the content critically and analytically. Other than that…picture books?
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? More mini-challenges in the wee hours.
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The cheerleaders were AMAZING and I really enjoyed their comments.
5. How many books did you read? Well, I guess I only completed one. Which is funny because I am normally such a monogamous reader.
6. What were the names of the books you read? I don’t remember.
7. Which book did you enjoy most? Northanger Abbey, though partly because of the format.
8. Which did you enjoy least? Oddly enough, probably the one I finished…that one by Jewett…something country/county pointy firs…I liked it, but it wasn’t really that engaging. Oh, and that introduction to the Koran, which was all about the history of translations in Europe. I would far have preferred some context during which it was written originally. I suppose since it’s annotated, the translator didn’t feel the need to do that?
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I was not a Cheerleader.
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? Quite likely.
O.K., I plan on turning off the lamp, and listening to the words of Miss Jane Austen for the next half hour or until I fall asleep, whichever comes first.
OH AND DON’T FORGET IF YOU READ A NOVELLA YOU SHOULD JOIN MY CHALLENGE

Well done! Enjoy your sleep!
You’re doing marvelous! I got myself an audiobook for when my eyes got tired, but I haven’t lsitened to it — once I closed my eyes… well, you can guess what happened
I’m going to check out your challenge RIGHT now!
1 and 2 AM were the most daunting for me too.
sleep well…
LOL @ your math difficulties. By the 12 hour point in the read-a-thon, I have to use the calculator on my computer for ANY kind of math stuff (even, ok, I read for 20 minutes, I need to add that to my total, lol)! I’m so glad you enjoyed the cheerleaders!
And I love Northanger-it’s one of my very fave Austens!
hey! good for you! my math is bad too. i just kept going to the dewey site to see what hour it was rather than figure out time.
i didn’t realize you were doing this. otherwise i would have come here sooner. bummer.
Congratulations on all you did during the readathon; funny how you switched off your monogamous reading and tried several formats over the 24 hours. I hope you had a restful day on Sunday!
Hope you were able to get some good rest! I liked Northanger Abbey and did find it really witty, too. The characters didn’t seem to be quite as developed, though.
You did really great and how lucky you are to have little Apollo to keep you company. If he comes up missing one day from your house…it was NOT me who stole him away.
I’m usually a monogamous reader, and I stuck to the same book throughout the Read-a-Thon and then fell asleep before I could finish it. LOL I still had fun, though.
Sounds like you had a great time, and you did really well. I am amazed that you were able to switch to an audiobook toward the end. That would have been the start of my sleeptime for sure! Northanger Abbey is one of the few Austen books I haven’t read but really want to. Glad to hear it’s witty.
I really love “Alex & Me.” I’m glad we’re going to be doing the blog tour together. I think you go before me.
I only did 12.5 hours on the Read-A-Thon … I know myself, I couldn’t handle the full 24.
