FreeVerse: An Almost Thanksgiving Gift of an Almost Original Poem

freeverse17Oh book bloggers!  I is Thankful for you!  To show my appreciation, I wrote this song parody for you back during BBAW.  Then I didn’t post it because I chickened out.  Then I was going to post it during the ‘Thon.  And then I chickened out again.  But then!  Then!  I realized that the Take a Chance Challenge is almost over and I haven’t done squat for the Lit Riffs category, wherein you’re supposed to write a story based on a song or about a song or inspired by a song or some such thing like that.  And so behold!  For the second week in a row, you get an (almost) original poem by me.

The song I went with is “American Music” by the Violent Femmes (if you’re not familiar with it, you should check out the YouTube video below first).  Strangely enough, this is not the first time I’ve used this song in poetry before.

“Blog About Books” by J.T. Oldfield
based on “American Music” by the Violent Femmes

Do you like to blog about books?
I like to blog about books?
Don’t you like to blog about books, baby
I want you to tweet me
I want you to link to me
I want you to tweet me, baby
Did you read too many books
I read too many books
Did you read too many books, too, baby?
You logged on too late
I Iogged on too soon
but every time that Darcy makes me swoon
It reminds me of you
It reminds me of you ooh ooh ooh
I need to someone to comment
Would you like to come and visit?
But nobody’s around to comment with me, baby
They didn’t like to blog about books
They never heard of blogs about books
They didn’t know the books were in my soul, baby
You logged on too soon
I logged on too late
But every time I look at that ugly name plate
It reminds me of me
It reminds me of me
Do you like to blog about books?
We like to read all kinds of blogs.
But I like blogs about books best, Baby
You logged on too late
And I logged on too late
But every time I look at that ugly name plate
It reminds me of me
It reminds me of me.
