Iye Can Haz Idea 2 Gives U a BBAW Happy?
Ugh. I really wasn’t going to post about this. I felt that I said what I needed to say in the comments section of Rebecca’s Post regarding the BBAW shortlists and gotten some answers in reply, and then got more answers after reading a post on Book Smugglers and that was that.
Plus, I still stand by what I said before that it is Book Blogger APPRECIATION week, not Awards week.
And for the record, I did not get shortlisted, nor was I on any panels, but I did do a lot of work helping Amy get contact info for every blog nominated (I went to 300+ blogs looking for contact info, and just that was ridiculously time consuming…I can’t imagine trying to judge in the categories that had dozens of nominations).
So. I really wasn’t going to say anything more until I highlighted some of the blogs I love that didn’t make the shortlist on Monday’s BBAW meme.
But then I got an idea.
If you haven’t done your voting yet, write down who you voted for in each category and then tell them, either privately or anonymously that you voted for them. That way if they don’t win, it will make them feel good. Of course, you don’t have to do this for every category–just those you feel strongly about.
Better yet, if you can think back to when you first nominated blogs, maybe you can recall someone you nominated who did not get shortlisted and tell them that you were rooting for them and are sorry they didn’t make it.
If you do this, I urge you to send the person a private e-mail or message on twitter, or leave an anonymous comment so that we don’t upset more people. The point, after all, is a celebration of EVERYONE who works hard at blogging.
However, I will break my own rule for a minute and give some examples. I could say (with the caveat that I could be wrong because after all I did do this almost 2 months ago):
Amy @ Passages to the Past: I totally nominated you for best Historical Fiction Blog and am bummed that you didn’t get it. I will always come to your blog in hopes of finding out about new Historical Fiction awesomeness.
If you can’t really remember accurately, you might do like I just literally just did. I tweeted T.Y. and said, hey, remind me what you had been nominated for…was it best culture blog? And she was all, no, it was most eclectic. And then I tweeted, ah, right. Anyways, if I recall, I nominated you for that because of all of your cool fashion stuff, and I’m sorry you didn’t get it and I <3 your eclectic-ass blog.
I haven’t done my voting yet so I can’t give you any examples of that, even though I do know who I will vote for in certain categories. But you should get the idea. Say, hey, ______, I just voted for you for _______. Of the 5 nominees, I like you the best. Hope you get it.
And that’s all you have to do. Because we are CELEBRATING here, people!
Can’t we just be happy that we have such a kick ass community??? F’real.
Let’s just remember what it’s all about. Let’s give our feedback to the Amy et al., for improvements (I still do think that the more we all know about the judging process the happier we’d all feel…maybe next year we can see the [blank] scoresheets before choosing our 5 posts) and leave it at that.
And even if nobody takes my advice, remember that if you were nominated for a single category to begin with, someone out there likes you…and they’re probably not alone.

Ah yes, well let me tell you why the scoresheets weren’t posted (we did plan to do that) they were literally finalized seconds before we started judging. While we had a lot of help, we also had people flake out on us. That’s the nature of a volunteer effort, I think.
Oh that is a great idea!!!! In all the craziness of the shortlist announcement we forget about all the fabulous blogs that were nominated.
Amy: well, that’s one thing done for next year, then!
Bella: It has been totally crazy, hasn’t it?
Iye likez ur idea. A lot. I seriously hope that all the hurt feelings will soon be crushed by a big wave of AWESOMENESS.
The event takes a lot of work, more than I am willing to give. I admire anyone who takes from their free time to do this thing. It’s something I can’t even begin to wrap my mind around.
Kudos to you for helping out! You rock!!
I know I’ve tried to tell people who I nominated that I nominated them … but now it is fading in my memory what I did. It is so hard because there are so many great blogs out there … and I hope no one gets their feelings hurt or feel they aren’t doing great. I guess that is the nature of awards. And thanks for all the work you did.
Great idea, J.T. I agree with Nymeth that hopefully some of the hurt feelings will subside and we can just enjoy the awesomeness.
You have touched on the crux of the issue…it’s about appreciation of people and their writing about what they love–books! I’m impressed! =)
This is a great idea, J.T. I’m trying to figure out who to talk about on my blog on Monday for BBAW and you’ve definitely given me ideas. Why not some of the people I nominated initially who didn’t get short-listed?
I’m really excited about BBAW. The awards are nice, but they are only a small part of BBAW. It’s really about recognizing each other and making new friends. At least that’s the way I see it.
I like what you said. I like focusing on the celebration of book bloggers period, and the community we have established. I can’t imagine the amount of work it must have been to put it together…300 blogs is a huge amount to visit for you alone.
I’ve already been doing that. I found BBAW only after the nominations were announced while surfing. It has been so fun to see just how many book bloggers there are and how different everyone is. Because so many of the short-listed blogs were so new to me and I couldn’t read all of them, I only voted on a few. I did, however, tell them I voted for them.
It’s been a little too crazy for me! I’m looking forward to more of the “appreciation” part and going around the net on the BBAW celebrations
I’m working on my post now. It has been evolving throughout the week, but I keep editing … afraid I’ll leave someone out and cause more hurt feelings. Edit, edit, edit until I post tomorrow morning. (I’m thinking of a theme, like other “series or features” or “memes” that I read each week)
Have a great BBAW! I appreciate you!
