Give Away & Pictures of My Kitten

10735_940847162603_2216539_51935204_2783843_nHere is our new kitten, Apollo.  We got him from a shelter about a week and a half ago.  He’s adjusting well to his new home, except for two things:

1. He likes to attack our feet in bed.  We have solved this problem by not letting him in our room at night.

2. He likes to chew on my books.  As I read them, or as they are lying there, it doesn’t matter to him.

I tell you this for two reasons:

1. Kittens are cute and I may well have enticed you to read this post or even come to my blog my promising pictures of kittens.

2. The book I’m giving away has some teeth marks.  Nothing major, which is why I’m still giving it away…unlike the bookmark that was to go with this book, which is torn to shreds.  You’ll just notice a few bumps here and there.  Pretend that they are secret braille messages.

strange_but_true_america_lgThe book I’m giving away is Strange but True America: Weird Tales from All 50 States by John Hafnor and illustrated by David Crawford.

To be clear, this is an INTERNATIONAL give away.  There is no need to be American to enter…just a curiosity about the U.S. and a thirst for knowledge…or at least a thirst for free stuff.

To win, leave me a comment telling me a strange but true tale from wherever you live.  For example, Seattle, where I live, is of, course, home to Starbucks.  The original Starbucks, which has been there for almost a century, has no place to sit.  It is very small and cramped.

You can get additional entries by doing the following:

Follow me with Google Reader or whatever you like to use to follow blogs (+1)
Follow me on Twitter (@bibliofreakblog) (+1)
Tweet about this give away (+1)
Blog about this give away (+3)
Stumble, Technorati Fave, Digg, or post it on Reddit (+1)

You have until Monday, October 5th, 2009 at 11:59 to enter.  The winner will be announced on Tuesday.

Apollo does not wish you good luck, as he wants the book for himself to chew on.  Or at the very least, to knock onto the floor.

I’m following you on twitter (will also post my strange fact in a minute. Just moved here. It will take some thinking).

At least according to http://www.strangefacts.com/laws.html, daylight must be visible between dancing couples in Utah.

He is ADORABLE! Kitty teeth marks give a book character =o) I’ve been thinking about getting Alis a brother or sister…maybe for my birthday or Christmas…hmmm!

Can’t think of anything strange, but true about Nashville right now. I can say that it’s true that there are a lot of strange country music fans (not me) here! LOL!

I may come back and enter when I come up with something more plausible!

The book sounds like fun! Please enter me. Kitten toothmarks add to the appeal.

Strange but true: The joys of living in Silicon Valley– with my spouse and I each having a BS degree, we are among the least educated households in our city.

I follow you on twitter, where I saw the tweet that lured me here with the promise (fulfilled!) of kitten pictures.

I follow your blog in the roulette wheel that is google reader. I probably will see this post there. Unless I give up again on catching up.

So adorable! I remember when my cat used to attack our feet. Luckily he’s grown out of it.

North Carolina is the site of one of America’s oldest mysteries. In the late 1500s, a colony of about 100 English settlers vanished from their settlement at Roanoke Island. Historians have never been able to determine exactly what happened to them.
    Thanks!

Apollo is a cutie! My three cats luckily don’t have a taste for books, although they do like to eat newspapers (hmmmm).

Strange but true tale from Knoxville . . . supposedly the old Andrew Johnson Hotel building downtown is haunted by the ghost of Hank Williams. He was carried out unconscious (some say already dead) for his final car ride . . .

I am from Sri Lanka and I am sure there must be lots of strange things in our country – its just that it is all so familiar to me!!! It may be strange only to outsiders.

    The kitten is cute!

I’m a follower on Twitter! Something strange about where I live? Easy – We have a monster in our lake called Ogopogo. Most people who live here believe in it. It’s sort of like the Loch Ness Monster, I guess. :D

I already follow you on Twitter and your blog from my iGoogle home page. Getting ready to Tweet about it as well.

I’m from outside of Boston, MA where Dunkin Donuts was started. You literally can’t go much more than a mile around here without seeing at least one DD. There are 2 across the street from each other and another right down the road in my town alone.

Thanks for the giveaway! I follow you on my Google Reader.

Yes, it was the kitten pictures ;-)

Can I just say that the city I live in used to not be an official city and the vote was approved the year my son was born? I don’t know if that quite counts.

I have a book with teeth marks on the jacket cover, right along the spine and several with the corners gone because the rabbit found them.

you’re on my blog roll, does that count as following?

strangefact.com was fun but I’ve got stop saying ‘be there in a jiffy’ since “A ‘jiffy’ is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second!”

Great book and great question! Since Auburn, Al is a University town, the population is equal parts people and cats/dogs. We also have a Vet school, so we have Vet clinics every mile or so all over town. So, My Chihuahua’s will be happy to add their tooth marks to your cat claw marks. The year I graduated from here, Besse the cow was voted in as the Homecoming queen. (In the 70’s of course).

I follow your blog on google reader.

Hi Bibliofreak and fans. I am the author of Strange But True, America, and want to say I’ve been joyfully following your contest for the book giveaway. I’m seeing lots of fun and wacky ideas/comments, a few of which might even make it into a future book. I’m hoping Bibliofreak will let me know the very best entry, and I will then place that as an entry in our 50-state and national reader contest (at my website). Thanks all … and Apollo, you really must stop chewing on my books!

Strange but true…well, when I lived in NYC I had a friend who had the full-blown NY accent. She said hawt dawg, I said hot dog. She laughed every time I said it, because she said I was saying it wrong. They think THEY talk correctly.
    +3 it’s on my sidebar.

Um, I totally admit I was enticed by pictures of kitties. My cat is old and while not fat is quickly on her way to getting to be. Ok, maybe that’s a lie.

Interesting about the place I live. I got nothin’. I guess no entry for me, but Apollo sure is a cutie!!

Oh wow, what a cute little kitty. My dog used to bite our feet all the time when she was little. Good thing she was cute too! LOL

Anyway, a strange fact about where I’m from? Oh wow, I don’t know…I guess we have a lot of haunted places, like a girl looking for her head. Kind of creepy eh??

Your kitten is WAY adorable! My cat enjoys nibbling on books when she feels she isn’t getting enough attention. There are several books I wanted to donate or give away that I can’t because there are puncture marks all up and down the covers. I mean actual wholes she chewed into them. I think she secretly delights in sabotaging my book gifting plans.
