Give Aways Old & New
‘Member how I said that I dig suspension bridges when I reviewed Alexander’s Bridge by Willa Cather? And ‘member how I said it’s because of this story I wrote about the Ambassador Bridge, which goes over the Detroit River?
Well here is a picture of some people working the the Ambassador Bridge. Freaky, huh?
Once you win and subsequently read one of two copies I have of Alexander’s Bridge by Willa Cather, you will see why I included this picture in this post.
Win? Two copies? Alexander’s Bridge?
Why, yes, I DO have two copies of this novella to give out to you lucky readers, wherever you happen to be in the world.
To enter, tell me something about bridges. It can be a personal story or a factoid or a literary reference, I don’t care what. I just have a weird love of suspension bridges.
Here’s what I’ll tell you: When the Ambassador Bridge opened on Armistice Day in 1929 it was a week after the stock market went kablooey. My grandfather was 18 years old, and he climbed all the way up and touched the “A” in Ambassador, just for funsies. That’s what my story is about (and the climb up and down is a metaphor for Detroit in the ’20’s and ’30’s which is totally relevant to Detroit today, but since I’ve never published this story, you’ll just have to trust me).
I totally reserve the right to grant extra points for cool things you tell me.
For extra points:
If you participated in the November Novella Challenge, I’m giving you an extra 10 points because this is a novella and I read it for said challenge.

One of my favorite places in Bosnia (my home country) is Mostar which is named after the bridge keepers who kept the bridge which runs over the beautiful Neretva river.
The bridge is a huge tourist attraction – folks love to jump off of it. It was torn down during the war but has since been rebuilt.

And I really, really want to read Willa Cather.
(Also a newsletter subscriber and tweeted) and hello, fellow Seattleite
Would love to win this book, love Cather. I follow you on fb and get your news letter. I will retweet this contest.
My husband is an engineer so every bridge we travel over has to be inspected so we love to visit bridge cities. I love the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran & also the swinging Bridge in Vancouver is pretty neat…

There is an entire episode of In Plain Sight on USA devoted to a bridge builder who ends up going into witness protection. It provides a really cool insight into the minds of people who build bridges.

Congrats to your winner. As for bridges, Anna at Diary of an Eccentric is deathly afraid of driving or even being on bridges. You should see her on the Bay Bridge over the Cheasapeake Bay in Maryland. I’d hate to see her on the Golden Gate bridge etc. Honestly, I love bridges and that you can see for miles when you go over bodies of water on them, unless of course its foggy. I’d love to make it to San Fran to see the bridge someday…That would be fantastic.

Bridge. We fight over the bridge in the famous clip. I say it’s Verrazano Narrows. Tour Manager says no, it’s another name. You know the one: it bucked and reared and twisted and did all sorts of other things that taught engineers a few things about bridges…
No need to enter me, of course. I’m dropping in to say thanks for the e-mail. I’ve got this posted at Win a Book!
About the bridges: The longest bridge in the world is Bang Na Expressway in Thailand (54,000 m /177,165 ft)

I dont like even driving over bridges and we dont have any of the size and magnitude that you seem to have over there! But I would like to read the book. I subscribe to your very newsy newsletter!
Well i’m from Michigan and i chose the Mackinac Bridge since you already had the Ambassador bridge
There is a really cool picture i wanted to share. It’s of the Mackinac Bridge when it’s lit up at night. I’ve been there and i have to say its amazingly beautiful. Some facts: its the third longest suspension bridge in the world. It opened to traffic on November 1st, 1957. It is 5 miles long. There are 1,016,600 steel bolts used. It employed 3,500 men at the bridge site to take part in the making. Now thats a lot of men and a lot of jobs!
I posted the picture in my blog along with my post (+3):

thanks!
Hi, I am a newsletter receiver. I have to teach bridges. I always start with The Tacoma NArrows Bridge. It is fascinating. The bridge swayed and collapsed and the only casualty was dog.
We have a friend who is so afraid of bridges of any type that she will go miles out of her way to keep from going over a bridge. Since we live near Pittsburgh that is a little difficult to do. Her response, when she has to go over a bridge, is to lay on the floor of the vehicle with her eyes tightly closed. Needless to say, she isn’t driving during those times :>)
The general rule for judging the longest bridge is the length of the span, so the according to this rule the winner is the Akashi Kaykio Bridge (1991 Meters – 6532 Feet), but Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana is the listed in Guinness Book of World Records as the longest bridge at 23 miles 1538 yards.
