A Bittersweet Give Away

Jamie-Ford_9780345505330-225x300O.K., there’s good news and bad news.

Good news: Ballantine Books has offered to give away a copy of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet to a reader of Bibliofreak.

Bad news: Because the book is coming from the publisher, this is open to US/Canada residents (and probably no P.O. boxes) only.

Good news: I don’t have to pay for shipping.

Bad news: Actually, I can’t think of any more bad news.  It’s all pretty good, so long as you’re a Yank or Canuck.

Oh, here’s some bad news, I’m going to make you answer a question to enter: In the book, grown up Henry, the main character, is searching for a record, either the original one he had, or another copy, that he had as a kid.  Is there anything from your childhood that you wish you had back?

I can’t think of anything myself, but I’ll tell you a funny little story.  My aunt found this breadbox with a rooster on it that my Grandma had growing up on E-Bay and she bought it and was all excited about it.  Then her brother tells her that he had had the original breadbox in his barn for a while now.

Lets make this really easy and say the contest will go for 1 week, so you have until the 27th.  Yes, I know that that is actually 8 days because today is the 20th.  But the 27th has already been decided upon.  Therefore, you have until midnight PST on the 27th to enter, and I’ll announce the winner the next day.

I had one of those original My Little Pony toy. Her name was Posey (as per the certificate). She was yellow and had shiny blue hair. One day it just disappeared – I don’t know what happened to it but, that is what I really want back. There are newer ones now..but it’ll never replace the old one :)

remember Popples? In my childhood I had just one–a yellow one–and I took it with me everywhere.
A few years ago when we were relocating from Canada to America, I found it and donated it. It seemed silly to cart it across the border with me.
Of course today, much of our old stuff is still packed up in boxes in the garage, but the one thing I think about all the time is that stupid yellow Popple.

I wish I had a little tiny tea set — I have such clear memories of it. It was incredibly small (even to me as a child).

Oh, so many things I wish I still had. My Teddy Ruxpin! Also, a music box I lost when I was about 6. It was one of the most comforting sounds of my early childhood. I’d love to hear it again.

I had a large stack of greeting cards and letters from my grandmas and my great grandmas that I collected through my childhood. I left them behind at some point and unfortunately almost everything in my mom’s garage somehow contracted a terrible case of mold. They are probably there but unrecoverable. It makes me sad because I used to love going through them.

How sad is this–I wish I had my collection of Trixie Belden books back. LOL I read and re-read those books as a young teen, and loved them. I guess I’m feeling a little bit nostalgic.

I wish I had my bedroom. I now live in a small ranch house with 3 small bedrooms. Growing up, my room was HUGE! (both IRL and in my memories!) What I wouldn’t give to have a 20′ by 20′ room again! WOW! Such SPACE! I even had a swing hanging from the ceiling…it was great!

I wish I had my portable, battery operated, yellow radio with carring case I received for Christmas when I was 13-15. That was the only time I really asked for anything special as I was always sick and felt bad that my parents were always having to pay Dr. or Hosp bills.

My mom once gave me a beautiful emerald brooch for my birthday when I was a teenager. I carried it to school the next day to show my friends. When I walked home later it had disappeared. I walked back down the road later to look for it and found it squashed flat and broken because a car had driven over it. That’s the one thing I would love to have back because I really loved it.

I had a beautifully illustrated copy of Cinderella – a gift from a Great Aunt who had never married, traveled to New York (big stuff for a little Kansas girl) and gave the coolest gifts. It was in my closet at home when I left for college, along with some other favorite books of my childhood. After I got married and had my own home I went to retrieve the box and it was gone. 25 years later, the guilty party still has not admitted to tossing, taking, moving the box. Would have loved to pass it along to my daughter.
