A Bittersweet Give Away
O.K., there’s good news and bad news.
Good news: Ballantine Books has offered to give away a copy of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet to a reader of Bibliofreak.
Bad news: Because the book is coming from the publisher, this is open to US/Canada residents (and probably no P.O. boxes) only.
Good news: I don’t have to pay for shipping.
Bad news: Actually, I can’t think of any more bad news. It’s all pretty good, so long as you’re a Yank or Canuck.
Oh, here’s some bad news, I’m going to make you answer a question to enter: In the book, grown up Henry, the main character, is searching for a record, either the original one he had, or another copy, that he had as a kid. Is there anything from your childhood that you wish you had back?
I can’t think of anything myself, but I’ll tell you a funny little story. My aunt found this breadbox with a rooster on it that my Grandma had growing up on E-Bay and she bought it and was all excited about it. Then her brother tells her that he had had the original breadbox in his barn for a while now.

Lets make this really easy and say the contest will go for 1 week, so you have until the 27th. Yes, I know that that is actually 8 days because today is the 20th. But the 27th has already been decided upon. Therefore, you have until midnight PST on the 27th to enter, and I’ll announce the winner the next day.

I had one of those original My Little Pony toy. Her name was Posey (as per the certificate). She was yellow and had shiny blue hair. One day it just disappeared – I don’t know what happened to it but, that is what I really want back. There are newer ones now..but it’ll never replace the old one
I want the childhood that I should have had, but didn’t have, back…..
remember Popples? In my childhood I had just one–a yellow one–and I took it with me everywhere.
A few years ago when we were relocating from Canada to America, I found it and donated it. It seemed silly to cart it across the border with me.
Of course today, much of our old stuff is still packed up in boxes in the garage, but the one thing I think about all the time is that stupid yellow Popple.
I wish I had my Chatty Cathy doll. I had her when I was five.
I wish I had a little tiny tea set — I have such clear memories of it. It was incredibly small (even to me as a child).
Oh, so many things I wish I still had. My Teddy Ruxpin! Also, a music box I lost when I was about 6. It was one of the most comforting sounds of my early childhood. I’d love to hear it again.

I had a large stack of greeting cards and letters from my grandmas and my great grandmas that I collected through my childhood. I left them behind at some point and unfortunately almost everything in my mom’s garage somehow contracted a terrible case of mold. They are probably there but unrecoverable. It makes me sad because I used to love going through them.

I had a Shirley Temple doll that I bugged my parents about for almost a whole year! I wish I still had her…not sure what happened to her
Thanks for the giveaway!
How sad is this–I wish I had my collection of Trixie Belden books back. LOL I read and re-read those books as a young teen, and loved them. I guess I’m feeling a little bit nostalgic.

I wish I had my bedroom. I now live in a small ranch house with 3 small bedrooms. Growing up, my room was HUGE! (both IRL and in my memories!) What I wouldn’t give to have a 20′ by 20′ room again! WOW! Such SPACE! I even had a swing hanging from the ceiling…it was great!

I wish I had my Nancy Drews! I had a ton of them, but they got lost in the shuffle when I moved out.
No need to enter me, babe. I’m dropping in to say thanks for the e-mail. I’ve got this posted at Win a Book.
And nope, I won’t fess up about the toys I miss the most. Not gonna do it.

Oh, goodness. I would have to say, if I could have anything from my childhood back, it would be my MASSIVE collection of Babysitter’s Club books. Now that Scholastic is revamping and re-releasing them, those old ones will be like collectors’ items!

Yes! I would really love to have the 1979 Kiss lunchbox that I had when I was a kid back again. Think of what that would be worth right now! Oh I miss that lunchbox. Best lunchbox ever!
I wish I had my portable, battery operated, yellow radio with carring case I received for Christmas when I was 13-15. That was the only time I really asked for anything special as I was always sick and felt bad that my parents were always having to pay Dr. or Hosp bills.
I had a stuffed elephant since I was 3 who travelled everywhere with me. For reasons I can’t explain I put him in the garbage about 10 years ago. I still miss him.

My mom once gave me a beautiful emerald brooch for my birthday when I was a teenager. I carried it to school the next day to show my friends. When I walked home later it had disappeared. I walked back down the road later to look for it and found it squashed flat and broken because a car had driven over it. That’s the one thing I would love to have back because I really loved it.
I had some cards that I really liked.

I had a beautifully illustrated copy of Cinderella – a gift from a Great Aunt who had never married, traveled to New York (big stuff for a little Kansas girl) and gave the coolest gifts. It was in my closet at home when I left for college, along with some other favorite books of my childhood. After I got married and had my own home I went to retrieve the box and it was gone. 25 years later, the guilty party still has not admitted to tossing, taking, moving the box. Would have loved to pass it along to my daughter.

There are so many things I’d wish for from my childhood. I think I’ll go with my dolls–Barbies, Cricket, and Cabbage Patch named Mary Beth. My life revolved around books and Barbies; I’d read to them. lol!

I wish I had my home-made cabbage patch doll. My family tells me stories about her all the time, but I don’t remember what she looks like at all.
I wish I had the cross that my aunt & uncle gave me for my confirmation. I always kept it near, but I think it was stolen when someone was taking things from my home without my knowledge.
