The Sea of Monsters By Rick Riordan

sea-of-monstersOnce again, Percy Jackson must go on a quest to save the day, along with side kick Annabeth.

Their mission this time: to save their friend Grover and bring back the Golden Fleece, from an island in the sea of monsters, which is guarded by a fearsome monster.

But this time, their quest is not sanctioned by Camp Half Blood.  In fact, they must sneak out, as the quest is officially given to their rival, Clarisse, the daughter of Ares.

And what’s more, they’re hindered by Percy’s new relative, Tyson, a cyclops.  Cyclopses are the mutant offspring of gods and nymphs, dimwitted, and usually brutal.  But despite Annabeth’s objections, Percy can’t help trusting Tyson.

And that’s the crux of the story, I think.  Because every really good adventure story has to have some sort of exaggeration of every day life, right?

To me (and here I’m not totally sure, as I’ve never had this experience, but I dated two different boys with little sisters who had Down Syndrome) Tyson is like the little brother or sister that, during your adolescent years, who you want to hide.  Perhaps because they are mentally impaired or disfigured.  Maybe they’re adopted, or a step-sibling and look different than you.  Maybe they’re gay (or hate gays and you are gay).  Or maybe they’re just really really dorky.

Or, maybe they’re a cyclops.

For whatever reason, you sometimes want to hide your sibling, even though you love them.

But in the end, they might save the day.
