Fables vol 4: March of the Wooden Soldiers by Bill Willingham
I am now head over heels in love with this series.
It starts out with another flashback, told by Boy Blue about the last battle that allowed the last ship of Fables to come to our world. Many Fables gave their lives in order to let others go. The night before the battle, Boy Blue meets Little Red Riding Hood and they fall in love. But tragedy strikes and, as Blue puts it, “That’s the point at which this story becomes a ridiculous farce, isn’t it? A Grotesque parody of an insipid O. Henry tale.”
This is the set up for what the rest of this volume is all about, what they’ve always dreaded…The Adversary’s Soldiers have come through the gateway. And at their helm is Little Red Riding Hood…or is she?
One of the really great things about graphic novels is that things can be hinted at in pictures. The soldiers look strangely familiar…
The battle that ensues is epically stunning. Brilliant. Exciting. Everything that you want from something that is necessarily action-packed as well as complicated.
But it leaves the reader hungry for more. What will happen next? Who will come through the gate? And who the Hell is the Adversary, anyways?
I finished the volume yesterday and today I’m going to the library to put in my book request for the next one.
