The RIP Challenge: Because Everyone Else Is Doing It!
Last Halloween, I was so excited to get trick-or-treaters in my new house. And then none came. At all. I live at the bottom of a very steep hill, and the only child on my block was only 1. Plus, because I live close to the University of Washington, some of the houses on my street are rented out to college kids, so there weren’t many houses with lights on. So, my husband and I split half a bottle of tequila and ate the candy I’d bought.
And yet I suspect that I will still buy Halloween candy and carve pumpkins again this year in the hopes that they come. Because I love Halloween. I’d say that Christmas is my favorite holiday, but Halloween is up there.
I know that I need serious mental help, joining challenges right and left. So, I was intrigued by, but decided not to join the RIP challenge, which goes from Sept. 1 to Oct 31. Initially.
But then I saw all sorts of bloggers posting about it and I just got more and more excited and then finally I clicked on the link for it and found out that you only have to read 1, 2, or 4 books and so now here I am writing this post.
The genres included in this challenge are: mystery, horror, gothic, dark fantasy, suspense, thriller and supernatural. I’ll be reading:
Dismantled by Jennifer McMahon
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
Pride & Prejudice & Zombies Jane Austen and Seth Graham-Greene
Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales.
O.K., so that last one is actually nonfiction and about people actually surviving in horrible situations, but it’s on my nonfiction reading challenge list, so I included it.
Pride & Prejudice and Zombies is on my Everything Austen list, and I already own Haunted and Dismantled, having just won the latter from Book Club Girl.
I considered including Her Fearful Symmetry so that I could have an excuse to buy it when it first comes out, but I really don’t need an excuse.
Because this challenge is for 1, 2, or 4 books, I’m shooting for 4, but will be guaranteed to complete 1 since the nonfiction challenge ends next month.
Thanks to Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings (what kind of name is that…I’m going to have to further search his site) for hosting this challenge.

I think you made the right choice in joining – this is a wonderful challenge!
Good luck with reading your four books!
I am so glad you came around and decided to join us. I do the one book option just for this sort of situation, it allows a person to participate and be part of the fun without feeling burdened by yet another long list of books to try to complete.
As far as the blog name, I would encourage you to click on ‘About the Site’ at the very top of my blog and it will reveal to you the mystery of the name.
Thanks so much for joining us!
I’m tempted to come and trick-or-treat at your place this year, now that I’m in the Seattle area…
Cecilia, what part of Seattle do you live in? We should hang, but only if you bring me ginger cookies.
Carl and Memory, I am glad I joined, too!
This is my favorite challenge of the year!! I can’t wait to read all your reviews!
lol that’s the best excuse to join that i’ve read so far! lol
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is also a comedy so I’m sure that’ll break up the horror/gothic-ness.
But it does look like a fun challenge.
I can’t wait for your review of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! It’s on my list of “Must Buys”! I tried to get it back in April when it came out but it was sold out already and I haven’t remembered to stop and get a copy in the meantime. Squee!
Deep survival sounds REALLY freaky…yikes. I’ll be doing this one too, just too lazy to post about it.
Have a great time–Carl hosts such great challenges.
I love your halloween story! It’s my first Halloween in our new house and I’m hoping we have a lot of trick or treaters! My boys are too young to go out but I will be stocking up on candy for the other kids.
This is such a great challenge. I’m going to have to join up.
Yeay! I’m the opposite (as in, I don’t like Halloween) but I’m still very excited for this challenge!
I joined this challenge last night and I forgot to leave you a comment! Thanks for doing this; otherwise, I would have never known! BTW, this is my very first challenge!

I LOVE this challenge; have fun.
OOH…. looks like spooky fun. When I have time I may need to check this out!
Glad you are joining in! I figured I would read P&P&Z also!
I’m thinking of doing this one myself!
I looooooove Halloween — possibly even more than Christmas (which kind of sucks once you get to be an adult — no offense to anyone intended). This sounds neat — and I’m totally interested in the survival book. I love books about that type of topic. I once read a book about all the different ways you can die and what happens to your body and what it feels like. Plus, I consider books like this research in case I’m ever in a horrible survival situation.
