Any Interest in This?
Today I was thinking about reading challenges for 2010. I have had a great response to the November Novella Challenge, and will probably host it again next year (seriously, that’s like 362 days away though). So, I was thinking about perhaps hosting a challenge that had to do with my interests and will include books on things that I’m interested in.
As a lot of you know, besides English, I also majored in Comparative Religion in college. So, I thought of creating a World Religions Reading Challenge.
This would probably have three levels. There are five major world religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism). However, if you want to get really technical, there are only three, because to be Jewish or Hindu you have to be born into it (of course you *can* convert, but these religions do not actively try to expand their numbers). So, there’s two levels right there. Then maybe a third levels, where you might add books about say, Shintoism, Ancient Norse mythology, or atheism. Or perhaps a book that finds cross-cultural similarities or explores the roots of more than one religion. Or, if say, you read a book about the Catholic Church, you might then read one about Southern Baptists or something like that.
You could read fiction or nonfiction for this. Also, Holy Texts would be accepted (of course!).
That’s my idea. But what I want to know from YOU is if anybody out there besides me would like to participate. I mean, reading that many books about religion might be boring for some people. But for me, that’s a big chunk of my TBR! Leave me a comment if you have any interest, or have any suggestions or questions, and if there is sufficient interest, then I’ll do it, starting probably in Dec, Jan, or Feb, and it will go probably 1 year.

Me! I’m in! LOL
I minor in comparative religion, so it would in fact be awesome!
I’d love to join, although I wouldn’t want to be restricted to having to read about specific religions. Keep us posted!
I would soooooo love to do this! This is my THING. I have BA & MA in philosophy of world religions, and mythology is my passion. So this is right up my alley!
I’d love to join! I agree with avisannschild that I wouldn’t want to be restricted to having to read about specific religions. I’d be willing to make a button for it
Just let me know!
Huh…I didn’t know that about Judaism and Hindu. Guess I learn something everyday.
This sounds cool. I’d be in. I love reading about religion; I have a basic world religions book that gave me a nice overview.
Definitely do it in 2010! I have too many things to catch up on in the next two months!
YES
This sounds like a great idea! Count me in!
I might be interested as I plan to read more about Muslim religion next year, but I don’t think I can commit to more than 1 or 2 books!
This sounds like an interesting challenge. I will participate if you decide to do it.
I think you would find a lot of people who want to do this. It is a great challenge idea. I don’t know if I would do this but I might consider it if you give me all year long.
I’d be interested (I love comparative religion) as long as the ‘rules’ aren’t too strict. I.e., I’d prefer being able to not have to worry about a ton of different categories, if that makes sense.
I would love to participate in this challenge, though like others I’d rather not be restricted to reading about the major religions. I was raised Catholic but have been Pagan, specifically Wicca, for the past 15 years. I hope we can address this growing religion as well.
