What *Might* Be the Last of the 2010 Challenges I’m Joining

TakeanotherchanceI’m so excited that Jenners is going to host the Take Another Chance Challenge in 2010.  I almost finished it this year (wrap-up post forthcoming) and I’m hoping that having 12 months will help me finish the whole thing this time.

Here’s the categories, and what I’m thinking of reading for each one of them:

1. Read Your Doppelganger: Jenny Oldfield or Pamela Oldfield

2. blogroll: I used my Google Reader, and I found The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie at Stephanie’s Written Word

3. 100 Best Books: Pretty Monsters: Stories from the Best YA books of 2009, and I’ll probably use this for the YA challenge.

4. Awards: The Accidental Tourist, which won the NBCC in 1985

5. Number of words in the title: 2: Old Rosa This was on my list for the November Novella Challenge, but I swapped it out for something else (my wrap-up for this one is also still forthcoming)

6. Genre You’ve Never Read: Erotica: I’m thinking about doing Best Sex Writing 2010 because I know someone who has a copy, but I’m open to suggestions.

7. Prejudice: some crap by James Patterson, I guess…what’s he written that is NOT part of a series?  Or possibly Twilight.  Oh, God, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

8. Real and Inspired: Gilgamesh and one of these retellings.

9. Same Word, Different Book: Agnes Grey and The Picture of Dorian Gray or else I’ll use the word God, because I think there’s at least four books with that in the title on my World Religion Challenge, but that is generally all referring to the same thing, so what’s the fun in that?

10. Become a character: No idea.

11. All in the Family: Brontes (though of course this excludes Agnes Grey).

12. Author Anthology pick: Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd or Sex, Drugs & Gefilte Fish: The Heeb Storytelling Collection

Chunkster2010I should have joined the Chunkster Challenge this year, as I’ve read many of them.  Why do I choose such long works?  No idea.

But many books on my lists for upcoming challenges do qualify for the 2010 Chunkster Challenge.

There are a few stipulations as to what qualifies: a chunkster is a book of one work (so no short stories) over 450 pages of adult fiction or nonfiction.  And no audio books.

I’m trying for the highest level in this one, just because I already plan on reading so many:

Mor-book-ly Obese - This is for the truly out of control chunkster. For this level of challenge you must commit to 6 or more chunksters OR three tomes of 750 pages or more. You know you want to…..go on and give in to your cravings.

I plan on reading for this challenge (based on the page length listed on GoodReads):

The Autobiography of Malcolm X  528 pages
With Fire and Sword 1135 pages
The Mists of Avalon 876 pages
Drifters 768 pages
A Fine Balance 624 pages
The Valley of Horses 512 pages
A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam 496 pages
God Has Ninety-Nine Names: Reporting from a Militant Middle East 576 pages
Baudolino by William Weaver 544 pages
James the Brother of Jesus: The Key to Unlocking the Secrets of Early Christianity and the Dead Sea Scrolls 1136 pages
The Histories 784 pages
The Decameron 1072 pages
Leap of Faith : Memoirs of an Unexpected Life 496 pages

Of course, some of these are on my challenge lists as possibilities, so we’ll see if I get to them.

Sbc2010There are definitely certain science topics I enjoy, and those I avoid.  Thus, you may see a theme in my list of possibilities for the Science Challenge here:

NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children
Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body
The Link: Uncovering Our Earliest Ancestor
The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution
The Economist Book of Obituaries

I’m thinking about doing this one too! How many challenges have you joined so far for 2010.

I’m still deciding, but I know it’s going to be a lot! I’m already commited to the 2010 countdown challenge, the year of the historical, Bella’s top 100 fantasy challenge, and my Michener challenge. I’m also going to be doing your World Religion challenge! To decide on the rest, I printed them all out and I’m going to go through with my personal library catalog (+1500) and see how many I can read my own books for. With as many books as I own, it shouldn’t be a problem…LOL!

Haha sure that is what they alllll say. I am limiting myself to Jenner’s contest this year. My life is enough of a contest ahah. Looking forward to seeing what all you pick.

I’m so glad you are doing my challenge again. I’m reading James Patterson for my “prejudice” book too! We’ll be suffering together!!! HAHA!

And I had no idea the “Autobiography of Malcolm X” was so long! Yikes! Maybe I should join the Chunkster Challenge as well!

Yay for more challenges! lol @ your prejudice book. That’s so weird-I’ve read Autobiography of Malcolm X and I don’t even remember it being that long!

I’m still trying to decide which challenges I’m going to join. I’m liking the looks of the Take A Chance Challenge. Yet another to add to my list.
