I picked up this book a few months ago, read a couple chapters, got bored, put it back down. A few days ago I picked it back up and wondered how I could have possibly been bored the first time around.
The Panama Hotel, the hotel in question in this book, is located in the International District, in Seattle, my adopted city. I’d heard of it before, but never given it much thought.
Which is not to say that I don’t enjoy reading other people’s meme posts. I just haven’t ever found one I wanted to participate in.
One of the things I forgot to tell you guys about novellas, is that they are often ridiculously cheap. I’ve been collecting some for this challenge recently, and bought some used for as little as 48 and 98 cents, and new for 2 and 3 dollars.
When one of my favorite blogs hosts a challenge, who am I to say no? Especially when I discover that I can totally cheat.
Penelope Holt, author of The Apple, which debuts Sept. 1st (and for which you can win an ARC here), is here to discuss the process of writing and labeling her book. After some confusion by early readers, York House Press has subtly, though meaningfully changed the wording at the bottom of the cover. The one pictured here is the one that will go to stores. The one shown on my review is the one of the ARC.
The subtitle on this book is “A Lighthearted Look at the English Language”. Certainly that’s apt. While most books on language (usage, etymology, etc.) take a serious approach, this is more of a jaunty romp through the wackiness of our words.
